How to Make Kids Enjoy Walking | Fun Outdoor Ideas for Kids

Discover how I turned boring walks with my 6-year-old into exciting adventures using simple games like scavenger hunts and bingo.

I used to hate going on walks with my son.

Not because I don’t like walking—but because every single time it looked the same:
“Are we done yet?”
“I’m tired.”
“Can we go back home?”

Sound familiar?

Everything changed when I stopped treating walks as “walking”… and started treating them as missions.

The Moment It Clicked

One day, I told him:
“Let’s find 5 red things before we get back.”

That was it.

Suddenly:

  • he was running ahead
  • pointing at things
  • asking questions

That’s when I realized: kids don’t hate walking — they hate walking without purpose.

Turning Walks into Games

Here are the things that worked best for us:

1. Scavenger Hunt Mode

We pick things like:

  • dog
  • bicycle
  • yellow car
  • tree with big leaves

Now he’s not walking—he’s hunting.

2. Bingo Cards (Game Changer)

I started using simple bingo-style cards:

  • find 9 things
  • mark them off

This adds:

  • structure
  • progress
  • excitement

At some point, I got tired of drawing these bingo cards manually every time.

So I started using a simple mobile app that generates bingo cards for kids based on the activity—walks, travel, or outdoor play.

It takes less than 10 seconds, and honestly, it made the whole thing sustainable.

If you want to try it, just Go to mobile app page.

3. “Mission of the Day”

Each walk has a theme:

  • “Find 3 animals”
  • “Spot something unusual”
  • “Find something that starts with B”

4. Letting Him Lead

Sometimes I say:
“You choose the direction.”

Instant engagement.
